Crab spider camouflage

A crab spider is one very cool arachnid. I’ve observed many over the years as they hide themselves in plain sight among a variety of blooms, patiently awaiting the arrival of unwary prey. They have the amazing ability to change their body colour to match that of the flower. The change takes place over a couple of days of sitting there. In this case, the spider is starting to take on the thistle’s purplish hue…two streaks on the abdomen and one across the head. To complete the illusion it then extends its crab-like forelegs upward in imitation of the petals…and then…waits…
